Mark O’Connell, Government Affairs Counselor
Mark A. O’Connell came to Washington Strategies after serving as Chief of Staff to U.S. Representative Jim Saxton (R-NJ) – Ranking Member of the Joint Economic Committee and senior member of the Armed Services Committee. O’Connell began his federal service in 1992 in Representative Saxton’s office and, in his time there, eventually focused on every major issue, including defense, economics, health care, environment, judiciary, and foreign affairs. He also served a brief stint as press secretary before becoming Chief of Staff in 1999.
In addition to his work on issues, O’Connell was responsible for raising over $1 million in PAC funds for the Congressman’s re-election committee. He also organized numerous events for Members of the House Armed Services Committee, raising tens of thousands of campaign dollars for incumbents and challengers. O’Connell was also responsible for developing the Congressman’s Federal Leadership PAC and the Great American Patriot’s PAC (GAP PAC), which raised thousands for Members of the House Armed Services Committee.
After 11 years of service to the U.S. House of Representatives, O’Connell joined Washington Strategies in 2003 and since then he has significantly enhanced the firm’s defense and natural resources capabilities and contacts. Our clients have secured over $20 million in federal appropriations through the work of Mr. O’Connell for various projects. He has also been involved in numerous successful campaigns in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and North Carolina.
A native of New Jersey, O’Connell is a graduate of Virginia Wesleyan College, an active member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of Stout Hearts, which raises money to bring Protestant and Catholic children from Northern Ireland to the United States to escape the religious fighting in that country.
